Simply Praise

Did you know there is an informal service, normally in the Lady Chapel at St Andrew’s Church, on the first Sunday of each month, at 6pm? It is what it says: a simple time together where those present choose hymns or songs, modern or traditional, from Mission Praise and Songs of Fellowship, learning new songs from time to time, and sharing a time of reflection and discussion on a particular theme that arises during the evening. Why not join us? We look forward to seeing you.

Elevenses

On the third Sunday morning of each month there is an informal service, without communion, with a small music group and various activities... and a sermon that's not allowed to exceed five minutes! It starts at 11am and everyone is welcome.

Pilgrim`s guide to Devon Churches: This book is a cameo of two thousand years of Christianity in Devon, and how the Church of England, in particular, has evolved. Exeter Cathedral and every single Devon Anglican church is included - from the oldest to the newest – with a photograph and enticing text inviting you to visit. The book is packed with fascinating information, including the origins and meanings of church features and furnishings like rood screens and pulpits. Many of the churches are open in the day-time, so people can come in and see a wealth of architectural features, find out more about local history, or maybe sit and reflect a while. With simple maps and a comprehensive index including Ordnance Survey map references, this is a book for the glove-box or back-pack, for Devonians or our many welcome visitors.

St Andrew's Singers

Although not a weekly church choir, we sing on special occasions and at other services during the year.

We would welcome anyone interested in joining us to experience the joy of making music together and adding to services and taking part in occasional other events. You do not have to be an experienced singer or have sung in a group before. (Most of our members hadn’t.) We would particularly welcome a few more men and altos: at present we only have one bass and two tenors among our 22 members, and four altos. We have members from Bere Ferrers, Bere Alston and Weir Quay, so you don’t have to live in Bere Ferrers to join. Our repertoire covers a wide range of religious music, from Iona, Taize and modern to traditional, gospel.... We also occasionally sing secular music for other events. Always open to suggestions!

If you would like to know more, just give me a ring on 01822 840609. Members do not have to come every week, although as we approach one of our ‘dates’ it does become more important to do so if at all possible. My thanks to all the members of the group, who have made this time together since we started in April 2008 so enjoyable. Ann Parsons
